| - I'm not the biggest fan of ZIA. Yes, I know that it's a pretty big independent music chain and that for Phoenix you need to take what you can get when it comes to smaller businesses, but ZIA just doesn't measure up to the likes of Revolver Records, Stinkweeds, and Eastside (RIP). Even the dusty old Trax and Wax on Central seems to tickle my vintage vinyl loving fancy moreso than this place. But of all the ZIAs, I guess this one is my favorite one (although I haven't been to the Las Vegas location yet).
The location isn't too big, but it's bigger (or seems bigger) than Tempe's location. The CD and Vinyl selection are abysmal. Mostly "new" or nu stuff...Hot Topic/Top 40/nu-metal central. The indie selections are "safe." Boasting Animal Collective and Wilco on vinyl but not the place to find any of the smaller labels that the other record stores in Phoenix may carry (Stinkweeds included). They have a trade counter, which is good for when you need to get rid of stuff, but they're a little unfair with their trades. Amoeba buys things at a slightly better rate, which is truly surprising. And the prices aren't that spectacular either. I don't think I see very many $18 CDs here in LA...so what's up with that, ZIA? I'll give them some credit though-- they've got tons of new and used DVDs and I always end up getting something to watch there. For music however, I'll just pass.
