  • I've been to Allegheny Wine Mixer about a half dozen times, and each time has been absolutely delightful and satisfying. I first visited about a year ago, when my partner and I wanted to pop in for a beer. It was nearing closing time on a weekday, so we were one of few people at the bar, but the bartenders were appropriately chatty (and hilarious), making us feel entirely welcome. They ended up offering us several samples of beer and whiskey, and despite only ordering a beer each, we ended up buzzed from all of the deliciousness the bartenders were willing to share. They even gave us a complementary baguette for the road! Since that first time, I've tried their wine, cocktails, meat, cheese, and dessert selections; everything is good there. I think they have some of the best cocktails in the city, up there with Salt of the Earth and Bar Marco. Their charcuterie portions are perfectly arranged and I think the price point is spot-on. They maintain an excellent blend of good beer on tap, great liquors on the shelf, and a wine list that seems to have something for everyone. When I've mentioned the name of the place to friends, they've been reluctant as non-wine enthusiasts, but I promise that it's not the kind of place where one will feel awkward for preferring a beer or a cocktail. Although I didn't think AWM could get any better, they outdid themselves with outstanding service and graciousness when my partner threw a surprise birthday gathering for me on a weekday a few months ago. The space is somewhat narrow, with the bar in the front, a handful of tables in the middle, and a cozy couch and coffee table section in the very back. Around 15 people came, so we squeezed into the back, and our bartenders/servers were on top of things the whole time. While 15 people is on the larger side for a party at AWM, it is a great place to gather with groups of friends, and it's fun to mix and match small plates to try a little bit of everything. I think the bartenders' personalities, the ever-changing menu and specials, and special events (they have DJ nights, and they really know how to make a playlist) really make this place a great destination.
