  • =============== THE AMBIANCE =============== If you have not had the desperate need to experience what it must have felt like being in Flashdance, you have not lived. If there's one thing EVERYBODY says about the Yoga Sanctuary is that it is the most beautiful yoga space in Toronto. I'm not so sure if I can agree with everyone's love of this space. Don't get me wrong, it's a nice looking space - large room, with high arched ceilings, the feel of a dance studio, and a great retro feel as you climb the stairs past the old cage elevator to get to the top. The thing for me is, that is a bit tired. The roof needs a bit of maintenance, and the back-right of the room in the summer-time has a noisy industrial restaurant fan pumping out lunch fumes that is not the most enjoyable in a class during warm weather. The cavernous space actually makes it hard to hear the instructor if you are near the back, and because of the square footage of the room, don't expect too much instructor adjustment or personal attention, as there's a lot of floorspace to cover. The changerooms are just a curtained off room and don't offer the greatest of privacy. There are no showers. There is only the one main practice room and it is closed off by doors from the reception area, and waiting area which is more of a hallway with shoe cubbies, and can get a bit squishy during class transition times. Again, don't get me wrong...overall, I think the studio is quite acceptable functionally and aesthetically...but I just don't go oooh and aaaah over it's beauty that many other folks I speak to, seem to do. ================ THE CLASSES ================ The Yoga Sanctuary offers a good variety of familiar class styles from Ashthanga, Vinyasa Flow, Hatha, Restorative to a few exclusive offerings of their own like their music choreographed Freedom Fridays, or their more pumpy Rocket Vinyasa. There really is a style offering for almost everyone. The instructors I've had have all been great, and because of the size of the room, even the busy lunch classes allow for a decent amount of space between mats compared with other studios with the same numbers. I've taken a number of Vinyasa and Ashtanga classes and liked them all. The level of difficulty for a Level 1/2 was about average, and lunch time vinyasa classes being a bit on the easier side as an "all level" offering =============== THE LOCATION =============== The location is great. College and Yonge. There's easy TTC access, but harder parking (I don't know the lots in the area, but I'm sure there must be some). Lots of apres shopping and dining if you're into that sort of thing. =============== THE SCHEDULE =============== This is where I think the Yoga Sanctuary shines. If you've ever been annoyed by many studios offering classes only during a rush-hour lunch, or a 7pm - 9pm slot, then this studios scheduling alone, may make it for you. The Yoga Sanctuary offers lots of classes at off-peak hours...namely late lunch (1:30pm - 3pm), early afternoon (3:15pm - 4:45pm) and late evening classes (8:50pm - 10:05pm). I think these are some of the only classes offered at a late time slot at a downtown location in the City. =============== CONCLUSION =============== A very good studio with excellent scheduling.
