| - I was in Toronto for a travel blogger conference, and being a traveler on a budget I knew I need to stay somewhere that wouldn't break my very small budget. Canadiana Backpackers Inn looked like the place to stay. It was affordable, and it was close to where needed to go. It's also in a great location close to downtown, Queen Street, and only a few blocks from the streetcars or metro. The staff were friendly, and I loved how each of the rooms were named after a famous Canadian. It was a very Canadiana experience. There was free wifi, which worked all right. And there was also a free breakfast with pancakes (well the pancakes were an every other day kind of thing, but still free pancakes). The washrooms were separate from the dorm rooms, meaning that you had to grab your stuff and walk down the hall when you wanted to take a shower, but they were private bathrooms (not like communal showers that I've seen at some hostels), so that was all right.
The one complaint that I do have was about the laundry facility. I'd been traveling for several weeks, and whenever I travel (no matter for how long) I never take more than about a week's worth of clothes with me. I don't want to have to lug around a giant suitcase filled with clothes, and I'm perfectly happy to take a couple of hours to do laundry on a trip. The Canadiana Backpacker Inn had laundry facilities, paid washers and dryers, but any time I went to check the laundry facilities to see if I could wash a load of clothes (which was on several different occasions over about 3 days) there was a note saying the washers in dryers weren't available to the public because housekeeping was using them for washing sheets. I used to work at a hotel, although not in the laundry department or housekeeping, but I know there is a lot of laundry for the staff to do (sheets, mattress covers, towels, etc). I don't understand why the Canadiana Backpacker Inn didn't have a separate washer and dryer or laundry room just for the staff to do the required laundry for the hostel. It was a bit of a pain not being able to do laundry at the hostel, as I had to walk over to Queen Street to find a laundromat to use.
Aside from the laundry incident this was a pretty great hostel, and if I'm back in Toronto and needing to stay close to downtown at an affordable place I'll look into staying here again.
