  • About a few weeks ago, we headed over to HCafe for a sweet ending after having dinner at Next Door on a Friday night. At 10pm, there was no lineup at all. However, selections were limited and there were only a few flavours left for the madeleines. We picked up 2 matchas, 1 black sesame and 1 honey lemon. Holding onto boxes with four madeleines, a taro cheesecake and a sakura no-bake cheesecake, we headed to the self-serve outdoor seating area with big smiles on our faces. Madeleines - $3 each (1 star) : Unlike the traditional French shell shaped version, the bakery's madeleines resembled muffins. Black sesame - This one should not even be called a madeleine as it completely lacked the light and airy texture and was extremely dry and dense. Matcha - This was slightly more buttery and moist, but it was still no where near the quality of the Dundas location. I am not sure if this was an off day, but to say the least, we were disappointed. Generally, this is one of my favourite madeleines with the addition of the red bean paste. Honey Lemon - The honey lemon was probably the most acceptable out of the batch we tried. However, I'm all about Asian inspired flavours as I feel you can find good honey lemon cakes at a lot of other places in Toronto. Cheesecakes: Taro ($10 - regular - 5 stars) - When it came to the taro cheesecake though, it was absolutely delicious. The hint of taro went really well with the cheesy flavour, and like the original cheesecake, it had that melt-in-your-mouth texture. The original cheesecake is still my favourite if I really had to pick, but the taro variation is definitely a strong contender. For those of you who are not familiar with Japanese style cheesecakes, it's very different from New York version. The Japanese variety is rich, creamy and slightly tangy (from the addition of lemon juice in the batter), but also soft and souffle-like at the same time. Sakura ($8 - small - 3.5 stars) - This no-bake cheesecake tasted good, as it was luscious and cheesy, but at the current price point, I would definitely not buy it again. I didn't find anything special about the sakura flavour specifically ($35 for a large cheesecake). If you eat the top gelatin layer on its own, you can taste the subtle floral flavour. However, when eaten in combination with the cheesecake, the cheesy flavour completely overpowers it. Overall, I do enjoy the products at HCafe. I'll probably give this location another chance, but if the experience repeats itself, I will stick with the original Uncle Tetsu location on Dundas.
