| - I came here with my son early Sunday morning -- they open at 7am -- and the place was empty. That worked for us since we didn't know how the place worked. The girl behind the counter greeted us and helped us understand that we should fill out a slip indicating which 12 doughnuts we wanted to create.
After the arduous process of actually DECIDING what we wanted -- I hadn't had any caffeine yet -- we watched as the doughnut were fried, glazed and topped. It takes some time, but these weren't sitting around waiting for us to show up.
You can pick from a bunch of pre-created options on their menu, or go freestyle and create your own. The doughnuts are all vanilla cake, but there is a huge array of glazes and toppings that you can select from (one glaze, two toppings per doughnut). You can even go naked and get the Plain Jane, which we added to our dozen to try out.
The doughnuts come out warm with a crispy outside -- eating them right away is definitely the way to go for maximum enjoyment. But, we took ours to go and they were still pretty warm after a 15 minute drive.
Of our mixed dozen, I found most of the glazes to be lightly flavored, so don't expect deep chocolate, maple or caramel flavor from the glazes alone. If you want chocolate, do a chocolate glaze and add chocolate chips as a topping. The warm doughnut melts the chips and creates a better-than-frosting experience. The lemon and banana glazes do pack more flavor, and the mint is pretty "minty" as well.
The cream in the "F-clair" was good, but I'd have to add chocolate chips, as suggested above, to make that one more "eclair-like". Most of what I tasted from each doughnut was the cake and a topping like the cinnamon sugar or chocolate chips. Which isn't bad unless you're expecting a big burst of other flavors... like I had hoped for the mixed berries in the "Ms. Prunella," which ended up being very subtle (not like jam in a filled doughnut). They have to be careful because too long in the glaze would make the product soggy.
Overall, if you like cake doughnuts and want to have a treat, I think one at a time is the way to go, especially if you have younger kids who would find it cool to pick what goes on their doughnuts and then watch the whole process.
A dozen is a bit pricey at almost $18, but they're totally fresh and custom, so I expected to pay a bit of a premium.
