  • This is a review for the bouldering lesson. Groupon. $17. $32 value. Shoe rental included. Completely worth it. I'd climbed indoors once before, many moons ago and never since. Practice? We talkin' about practice?! The time off proved invaluable in allowing me to hone my abilities. Today, I was able to navigate every route Justin, our instructor, showed us and I did it with dignity, grace, and brute strength. If this had been the Empire State Building, I would've given Spider-Man a run for his money. V0? Nooooo, siree! I'll take a V10, thank you very much, for I am the next Ninja Warrior! And then Justin called my name and snapped me out of my reverie. The class has a limit of 6, but during this session, it was just me and two others. This meant we received individual coaching and were given the opportunity to attempt each route several times under Justin's tutelage. He was a fantastic instructor who was very patient in the guidance he offered and very detailed in relaying to us how to manage our flailing limbs in a sport that is very technique sensitive. I appreciated how on each route we scaled, he went as far as to tell us when and where to reach for our next hold, and with which hand or foot. He was GPS-like in his precision and it was extremely helpful. We stuck with the blue and the white routes and I wore red shorts. Because 'murica. And because those routes were the ones designed with noobs like us in mind. It was loads of fun as well as being extremely challenging. My hands have been left without skin and look like ground beef. I've been alternately soaking them in a bucket of ice water for the past hour and nothing has ever felt this good. That includes the weird spidery head massagers that random mall vendors are always hawking. I know you know what I'm talking about. The ones you feel guilty for using because who knows how many other heads they've touched and lice and dandruff and and and..... but just a moment more..... I may currently be in the beginning stages of frostbite? But you know what? I don't care. Other notes: I didn't peruse the gym area. Monday night, 7 p.m., not too crowded. Very clean. $17/day pass. $59/monthly. Average rates are lower for annual passes and for students. The Groupon I used includes a one week membership. P.S., petting cats feels pretty darn good, too. Like seriously good.
