  • This restaurant was featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, and that recommendation alone was good enough for us, having looked forward a long time to trying it out. It is also touted online, in the menu, etc. as the "#2 best Mexican restaurant in the US"! After this experience, I think this must be a rating the restaurant has given itself. At almost any other Mexican joint we go, the food/service is better. The building and main part of the restaurant itself are super cool. We loved the feel and atmosphere, and is the only reason it I gave 3 stars. It was not even half-full when we arrived at 5-ish on a Sunday evening with a group of 20+ that was split up at three tables in a back room, six at our table. It was too warm with no atmosphere. Near the end of our meal, they finally opened an outside door in the room to some fresh air with 70+ weather, which was nice. Now to the meal. I ordered red wine which was so bitter, I sent it back. I got one each of a Guild Chicken and Al Pastor Pork taco. These are literally the smallest tacos I've ever seen, on a minuscule corn tortilla. The chicken was fairly tasteless with "dry" grated cojita so tiny (I like crumbles of fresh) that it was like a sprinkling of canned Parmesan cheese. There was no "grilled corn, red bean pico or avocado" visible, so very disappointing. The pork was to be served with grilled pineapple, jalapeno bacon and pickled red onion--sounds awesome, doesn't it?! The pork was good, but the only condiment visible were the onions. I had to douse each taco with one of the sauces served with the chips. My fiancee ordered the chicken enchiladas, which took so long that the rest of the table were half-way through their meals by the time it arrived. (Another guest ordered the same entree and his plate came out at the same time as the 4 plates of tacos. We insisted they go ahead and eat after waiting several minutes so their food wouldn't get cold.) I will say the enchiladas were pretty good. But $9 is too much for the 2 tiny barren tacos, with not even a veggie garnish of cabbage, lettuce, tomato, or anything! I wish I had asked what the $1.99 "Daily Taco" was, but by the time we could order, I forgot and the waiter did not offer a description; $4 wouldn't have been as bad. Anyway, except for having too many chips while we waited to be served, I left a bit hungry, disappointed and unsatisfied. We might return again to enjoy the atmosphere of the main restaurant and maybe, if we aren't a table of 6, the food would come within a reasonable time and the tacos would appear as literally described in detail on the menu.
