  • Let's start with the more general issues: 1) Sound. Depending on where you are, it's decent. I've heard way better, and it would depend on the band and their usage of bass etc,, but it could be worse. The artist's equipment probably matters, in that excellent gear can make up for what Sound Academy lacks. 2) Layout. It blows. If you're short, show up early. The venue floor layout kind of winds/angles, and the result is a front area not much wider than ElMo (another venue where layout blows for short people). I'm average height and only was able to see because I was behind super short girls. 3) Drinks. Too pricey. Don't bother. 4) Bathrooms. I went early on in a show and half the stalls in the women's bathroom had no toilet paper. It's like they didn't even bother stocking before a concert. There were water puddles on the floor. 5) Transit. Lousy location. If you aren't driving, it's a joke to get to in the winter, and even getting a cab out is a nightmare because they won't even come into the loop, so you're still trudging through unplowed snow for ten minutes to get one, and twenty minutes to get a bus. But now, let's get to the real reason I avoid this venue: the absolutely ignorant security staff. The last show I went to, I ended up filing a formal complaint. The security twit who checked me went through my purse, as usual. I have my prescriptions in there, in labelled bottles from the pharmacy, with my name on them. She picks up my clonazepam for my panic attacks and goes, "what's this?" I say, "Clonazepam, like the label says." She says, "And why do you have this?" I say, "I get panic attacks. I always carry them." She then asks, "And these are yours?!" I'm like, "You have my wallet right there. Check my photo ID. The name matches." She huffs all rude and says, "Well, that doesn't really matter. People bring them in here for recreational reasons." She then implied that I was a freak to have them for a medical cause, and also implied I was lying and had them to deal. She laid off when I said, "I've seen hundreds of concerts and no other security guard has had a problem. And I've worked security." This whole process took over five minutes, and I was near the front of an enormous line of people... and doors opened late. I walked in and the opener was already playing. I feel sorry for the people behind me. I also should have been way closer, but dozens sailed past me through other guards in the debacle. To the manager's credit, when she phoned me back, she was pissed at the security guard, but that's not good enough. My experience was a year ago. The security are still getting slagged on Yelp now. Obviously, they don't care to employ properly trained personnel. Honestly? Unless it's a band that NEVER tours and you cannot go to any other show on said tour, AVOID SOUND ACADEMY. It's even worse than Kool Haus.
