I have been a participant in the downtown Phoenix scene for about a decade now. There are many terrific venues for art, music, and refreshments. I ran across The Trunk Space early on and have yet to find a venue that matches all that this one does. Many have come and gone -- others have adapted and "upgraded."
Yet, The Trunk Space remains at its core: an accessible venue for artists and musicians, a cool place to meet new and friendly people, the right spot for a wallet-friendly show to see, and a place I can get hot or cold drinks that aren't sold at the local convenience mart. Did I mention the vegan ice cream bars?
But, it's much more than all of that. I've seen rare indie acts coming through town. I've seen local acts who are not acts anymore. I've seen absolutely insane performers doing things that, had I not seen them for myself, I would have thought they'd be a waste of time -- but they were not. There are traveling artists who go their start here. It's a true diamond in the rough called downtown.
And, it remains my favorite space to start my downtown crawl and the place I like to stop by at the end of the night for a good conversation with someone new.
