  • With a successful restaurant in Tempe Marketplace, I decided to grab a relaxing dinner at their PV Mall location after a hard day at work. I should have thought twice about this poorly managed restaurant which unfortunately is carrying the Genghis Grill name. When I arrived, the hostesses did not greet me with the same energy as the hostesses in the Tempe location. Specifically, I waited for four minutes at 8:30pm on a slow night. The variety of food was slim, and they no longer carry shrimp. Though the cooks were kind enough to ask if I had food allergies, I watched as two cooks exhibited poor practices. They dropped food onto the counter, then picked it up and put it back in some poor person's bowl! Unappetizing.... My waitress was attentive, but when I mentioned my disdain for this location's choice to discontinue shrimp (it is one of my favorite items with Genghis), I overheard the snide manager, counting money at the end of the bar, tell my waitress "If he wants shrimp tell him to f---ing go to Red Lobster across the street." Classy. Though my waitress did an excellent job, that manager's remark ruined the ambiance of my whole meal. Much of the staff at this location varied. My waitress did an excellent job, but that is where the compliments stop. The cooks and other staff members looked disheveled, and I had the unfortunate experience of watching one male staff member reach under his shirt and scratch his chest. Perhaps my standards were too high as I have been spoiled by the appeal of the Tempe staff. The Tempe staff's uniforms were in unison, and the diverse staff all remain appealing to give diners a great experience. The PV Mall Location appeared to be comprised of a poorly trained group of people who do not take pride in their work. As someone who waited on tables for 10 years, I understand the challenges and mistakes a waiter may make in one night, especially on Thursdays. I do however recognize customers go out to eat to be entertained and to allow someone else prepare meals and not have to worry about dishes after a busy hectic day. Customers should not cringe, wondering if the cooks are preparing their food properly or happened to have dropped your food before serving you. I hope Genghis' corporate offices keep an eye on this place, because it is in bad need of an overhaul. If they want to protect the Genghis brand, they may want to focus on improving this poor excuse of a franchise.
