I'm now super thankful for emerg vet clinics after having to use one for the first time in almost 30 years of having cats when our new two year old rescue kitty had an emergency on the weekend and being urinary tract related, it could have been a major emergency (ie could have led to kidney damage/ruptured bladder) had we waited until Monday to see our regular vet.
First downfall - the front desk people aren't overly nice which is unfortunate for the distressed pet owners who are there for an emergency (like us). The emotionless girl who admitted us took us to a private room and she wanted to weigh the cat first. I said that will be impossible as even I can't even pick him up (he is still pretty feral) and said it's better to skip the weigh in or wail until the vet is ready to examine him. She told me no and of course when I opened the carrier he ran and wedged himself under the desk so she just shrugged her shoulders and left us in there with a petrified cat for 40+ minutes. I was annoyed as I had warned her and it would have been less stressful for him if he was still in his carrier. Making the cat more stressed is something they should not want to do!
Finally saw the vet. She was better but also not overly friendly or calming. Really matter of fact and seemed pretty rushed. Sort of answered questions but I feel like I didn't get the answers I needed and had to call my own vet after the fact for better information (ie follow up procedures, food changes etc) after the visit which he gave me free of charge.
We were there a total of four hours (walk-in as we had no appointment since it was an emergency so had to wait). Procedures done: blood and urine test, physical exam to feel for blockage, antibiotics and pain killers (for an assumed UTI diagnosis due to bacteria present in the urine) and they sedated him by injection (which was unnecessary as our regular vet was able to do xray/exam/nail trim without sedation....). These pretty basic procedures cost us just shy of $1000!!! According to our regular vet, if we had taken him there it only would have run us about $300 :/ 3x markup is bs.
I get vet care is expensive and this is an emerg clinic but that price tag was absolutely insane. I know they need to charge more being an emerg clinic but I feel this is totally taking advantage of people in distressed circumstances and who will dish up any amount to save their pet - or even worse, some people may avoid this clinic's emerg services due to the unreasonable price tag and wait for their regular, more AFFORDABLE vet to be open, but at the risk of making their pet suffer, and get even more sick or even die.
I'm happy they were there for us and I would go back if I urgently needed to but I really wish they were more moral with their price tag. Most people don't have that kind of money but will still spend it if it means saving their pets life. Very sad and stressful.
