I really love Pittsburgh but I've never warmed up to the Carnegie Museum of Art. It's a great collection generally focused on art after 1850 (although other cultures from antiquity are somewhat represented). However, the galleries are uninspiring and a bit confusing, too. Why venture to the adjacent natural history museum to see superb Native American items when art from other cultures is on display in the art museum? Why are there Egyptian artifacts in the art museum and natural history museum? I suppose many visitors like the bundling but, for me, it's like too many college students sharing a small dorm room.
Fortunately, I was able to time my visit for the 2013 Carnegie International exhibition and it was great to see galleries turned over to some adventurous displays although I was more impressed with acquisitions of past Internationals from artists like Louise Bourgeois and Doris Salcedo.
I'll keep returning to the Carnegie Museum of Art hoping for a compelling experience that lodges itself in my memory.
