| - I've been coming here regularly for a while, and it is definitely my "go to" place for a haircut. I have never received any of the spa services, so cannot comment on their quality. This is the second Aveda Institute I have been to (the other being in the Midwest), and so I was fairly accustomed to the practice. For those who have never been here, please accept that your experience will most likely take longer than that of an average salon. With the fact that there are students doing your hair, and they have regular checks with instructors, it is just logical that the service would take a while (so do not go here if you're on a time crunch).
I will say again that your experience will be 100% dependent on what instructor/student you get. The first time I went here, I almost did not want to come back because the instructor was incredibly rude, and when the student asked for help gave both the student and me attitude. I have been back 5 times since then, and haven't seen that instructor, so it is possible she no longer works there. All of my experiences since have been great. I tend to find a student I like and then keep going back to them until they graduate, and then find another student.
One of the biggest perks of going to Aveda is the price, it is a flat rate for the haircut, and you cannot tip. The haircuts include a shampoo/wash, mini-facial and hand massage. You can skip all this if you want, but I normally indulge. I have seen several people get upset there about trivial things, but again, 1) you get what you pay for and 2) they are students, you knew that coming in.
Again, if you're super high-strong or high-maintenance, do not go here. It is a place full of students, they are there to learn. Accept it and leave your attitude at home. If you are more laid back and patient, it is a great haircut experience that I'd recommend.
