| - This is easily the best breakfast place in Ahwatukee, probably in the East Valley. It gives high quality, organic places like Joe's Farm Grill and Liberty Market a serious run for their money. The first time we tried Hillside Spot, they had just been featured in the AZ Republic. When we arrived, they were turning people away - they couldn't handle the volume. Each additional time that I have been for breakfast (always on a Sat or Sun) it has been crowded, but not mobbed. We usually wait about 5 minutes for a table.
The food is amazing. Large portions of good, high quality food. I love the Croque Monsieur - a thick slab of frilled french bread slathered with bechamel sauce and topped with thin-sliced grilled ham, melted Gruyere cheese, and an egg (the egg is optional, and is added at no charge). My wife had the huevos rancheros. The salsa verde was fantastic and the potatoes were great, but I found that dish to be a little boring.
The pancakes look fantastic and the coffee is really, really good. They use an open kitchen design so that you can see the food prep, and every single dish looks incredible. I have not been here for lunch, but the burgers look excellent.
I am in love with this place, but am going to give it a 4 just because its still rather chaotic in here. I was confused about how to get my drinks, the waitresses run around yelling out your name as they deliver the food that you ordered from the register, and it is often just a bit overwhelming. On the other hand, this is only because the place is so good, and people are starting to figure it out.
I am SO glad that a place like this exists in Ahwatukee.
