| - i vividly recall a time when cupcakes were reserved for that day in elementary school where children got to see just how cool (insert)'s mom was on (insert)'s birthday. the "sweetest" moms were the ones unafraid of sprinkles and liberal with the food coloring. remember those cupcakes with the rainbow colors splashed throughout? yum.
alas, i was one of those terminally unlucky children with a summer birthday - never to have the opportunity to show off my mother's baking skills. sigh. the trials and tribulations of youth.
how the times do change. the seemingly innocuous cupcake has recently laid siege on the dessert world. it has morphed from its unassuming place in large tupperware containers to the higher echelons of haute cuisine. ever seen an advertisement for a swiss dark chocolate truffle cupcake with raspberry ganache and whipped crème fraiche? yep, this is what i mean.
divine cupcakes is no exception, per se . . . but the folks here do make a mean little elitist cupcake.
i pretty much inhaled my frou frou version of reese's cake with peanut butter icing. the cake was moist, and the buttery frosting was whipped to a perfect consistency (no sugar brick to be found). my husband's aforementioned chocolate with a magical fruity center was also amazing: tart, sweet, and . . . CHOCOLATE. i did, however, have two complaints: the size -- i felt as though the cupcakes could have been a bit larger. no, it's not my inner cheesecake factory rearing its fat, american head; it's about bang for buck. the second? there really weren't that many choices left for our late afternoon snack. if most of the menu has been consumed, i'm not a happy camper.
other than those details, i was completely charmed with divine cupcake's food AND flexibility . . . do you have a family member who can't do the gluten, sugar, or milk products? divine cupcakes has an answer for you. they welcome special orders for vegan cupcakes, gluten free goodies, and anything your health-conscious heart desires.
would you rather have a whole cake then its napoelonic counterpart? you MUST try divine cupcake's pull-apart cupcake - think: a bunch of cupcakes baked together and frosted as one. you pull 'em apart, and enjoy!
as if all of this isn't enough, divine cupcakes also has its own homemade froyo . . . complete with a topping buffet. this may not sound like solid competition for the elitist cupcakes, but come july, we'll just have to see about that. if it's available the day you visit divine cupcakes, try the orange flavored froyo -- it's like a fancy version of my favorite flintstone's pushpop.
all-in-all, i think i'm okay with the cupcake's nouveau riche status . . . as long as i can sample the wares of cute maisons like divine cupcakes.
