  • We have been staying at the Rio a lot lately on our trips to California. It's a good overnight stopping point so the baby doesn't get too overwhelmed in the car on a long trip. We really like the rooms in Ipanema tower and have had very enjoyable stays. Until the most event visit. We booked online and chose a deluxe room with strip view for a little extra since we have enjoyed our rooftop view rooms in the past, we thought splurging a little would be nice. We checked in later than usual after going straight to dinner upon arriving in Las Vegas instead of checking in to the hotel first. We were assigned a room in the Masquerade tower, which we had never been to before. We thought it would be fine, how different could it be? As it turns out, not even in the same universe as the other tower. We were very unhappy with the older rooms. Let me list my complaints - The couch, while much bigger, is not a pull out like the other rooms. The carpet is old and gross. Don't walk on it with white socks! There is a window from the main room looking directly into the shower, which my kids were horrified about and nobody would shower while we were there for two days. The "strip view" is at a weird angle and not at all what we expected. This tower is far away from everything else we usually like about the hotel. It's in the weird wing where there used to be parade floats dangling to the ceiling that are no more, just a weird track still there. When my husband called to ask nicely if we could be moved, we were told they were out of Ipanema tower rooms and this wasn't even a deluxe strip view room that we had paid extra for. They were unhelpful on the phone and asked my husband to make the trek across the casino to come talk to someone in person, which he did, but nothing really came of it. They refunded the resort fee for the night and promised they would move us the next day. They said they would call as soon as a new room was ready in the Ipanema tower. Imagine our surprise (not) when that call never came the next day. And at that point we were settled in and didn't want to move anyway and too tired to go complain anymore. Positives - we like the pool. We like breakfast at the Hash House. Free parking still available, which is a big plus. The kids love the KISS mini golf and arcade area. We will probably look for other accommodations on the next trip in August, sad to say. It's the end of an era for us.
