  • After living but a stone's throw from The Gelato Spot on Camelback for several years, I was so pleased to find this little gem near our new 'hood in Scottsdale. It's friggin' hot here most of the year and I'm usually looking to cut calories (albeit usually not effectively), so to have a cool, fast and sort of healthy treat option nearby is much appreciated. Although hardly ever teeming with patrons (it's in the Pavillions, after all...the poor, oft vacated Pavillions, that should and could be a food, retail and entertainment destination the likes of Desert Ridge or Tempe Marketplace for the inhabitants of Scottsdale's southern third) the soft and refreshing aqua, white and silver color scheme is bright and welcoming. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Yogurtini, for not policing the sampling like some sort of Yogurt Gestapo. So many other yogurt shops seem to post an employee holding a stack of tiny paper cups who you must ask for help to taste a flavor. There is an inherent pressure and helplessness that I for one abhor when I have to ask permission to try one, maybe even two flavors, and then, feeling like I'm either hoarding the help of the employee from the other patrons or like I'm Oliver Twist asking, "Please, Sir. May I have some more?" Yogurtini allows everyone to help themselves! Try as many as you like! It tells me that they are more inclined to keep their customers happy rather than focus on cost containment. The day's flavors as well as the fat and calories (per 4 oz serving) are posted and easy to read. There is an array of flavors from chocolatey, rich desserty to tart and tangy to fruity and fresh. The mix-ins offer even more options: fresh fruit, granola, chocolate chips of all sizes, so many candies my daughters kind of go cross-eyed at the possibilities, and six or eight different sauces to top with. Obviously with cost varying by weight, one may want to consider how much crushed waffle cone weighs, but our family of four usually makes out pretty well, especially since the kids can choose exactly what they want (gummy worms AND marshmallow topping AND chocolate sprinkles, oh my!). What I find most endearing about Yogurtini is it's staff. Did the cast of Glee get a part-time job here? I mean that in a completely complimentary light. It's not like they break out into a singing flash mob...well...they do set up karaoke every Friday night which is really more adorable than anything. They have some very talented singers on staff, welcoming suggestions and willing to download tracks if the song requested isn't in their catalog. They even found an instrumental version of "The Sun will Come Up Tomorrow" and encouraged our eight year old to come up and sing. (Stage-mom Moment: she even drew a crowd from the movie theater to come watch her sing! Sigh...they grow up so fast! ...tear...sniff) Great flavors. Great staff. Great location (for us anyway). Here's hoping they make it!
