  • What a horrible experience! I've stayed in hostels all over the US and Europe and have never experienced anything like this weird, smelly rude place. I booked through hostelbookers.com, and paid a 10% deposit in advance online. I arrived as scheduled and walked up to the house. An older Chinese woman was sitting on a chair on the porch and I smiled and asked her if this was the hostel. She scowled at me and in a very suspicious hostile way said "no, no what you want?". I thought "Uh-oh, this is NOT good". I knew I had the address right, but obviously there was some mistake and I was trespassing on this woman's private property. I mumbled an apology and turned to leave but just then a young Chinese guy walked up. He said yes this WAS the hostel and let me in past the angry-looking woman. The house smelled very bad and was dark and dingy. The guy acted like he was not expecting me and asked for my "paper". I started to dig it out, but was getting a really bad vibe, so instead I asked to see the room. It was awful, dark, dingy, very depressing and smelled like rotten cabbage or something. Suddenly the young man said my name and said "you are booked for 2 nites"? He knew my name after all? This was just 90 seconds after acting like he had no idea who I was or that I had a reservation. I turned and walked out, forfeiting my entire deposit and ended up spending hours looking for a wi-fi hotspot in Chinatown so I could find a room somewhere else. What a nightmare. I wonder in retrospect if the old woman thought I was a health inspector or something and was trying to pretend I had the wrong address to stop me from entering - because she knew how nasty the place was inside. This hostel's description is totally misleading. Rather telling is their own claim (complete with exclamation mark) that there is "No bad smell ! ". They're obviously aware of it and instead of doing something about the stench they are just denying it. p.s. at the new hostel I booked into that night, I mentioned the horrible experience with the Chinatown place. The owner of the new hostel shook his head and said "that's not a hostel". He was right. My guess from being there is that it is just a some people with a dirty, smelly house trying to earn some cash by renting out their spare room.
