| - The brief scoop: damn, that ice cream is good.
How about the long-winded, chatty Natty scoop? The shop is run by pop-up vendor Sweet Sammies Ice cream Sandwich Company who use fresh and locally sourced ingredients and offer both rich and fresh ice cream flavours. These are often changing. Of course the sammies are their signature and they bake a variety of cookie types each day which you can mix and match with the ice cream.
I was in more of a naked ice cream mood myself and sampled the PB & J (yum - it's the real deal with Manning Canning jelly in there), but settled on the raspberry white chocolate cheesecake flavour. I caved and figured that I should at least try a cookie considering where I was and sampled the classic chocolate chip. I went fatty Natty lite with a kiddie scoop then mashed it with the cookie. The highlight for me was the ice cream itself. Like Greg's, Ed's Reel Scoop, La Paloma or other good ice cream or gelato spots in the city, it is the sort of home churned stuff that is actually made with the quality ingredients that the title would imply. My ice cream literally tasted like a delectable american-style cheesecake, graham cracker crumbs and all, but smoother, creamier and colder (duh).
I am impressed that Scoop Shop has some vegan offerings. The cashew cacao nib ice cream made from soaked cashew nuts and Valrhona cacao nibs caught my attention! You can have it as a sammie if you'd like, placed in between two pistachio meringues.
Overall, I enjoyed the tasty ice cream and relatively relaxed experience at Scoop Shop more than the Bang Bang chaos of last summer. It's still early days for them though and so this point could be outdated VERY soon. Unlike Bang Bang, it's not on Ossington between Queen and Dundas, but it's not exactly in the boonies either. It's located on Dundas West near Palmerston street, just a few blocks west of Bathurst and a handful of blocks from Trinity Bellwoods Park.
