  • My first experience at Allegheny Wine Mixer was definitely not a negative one, but I don't think it lived up to my expectations. After reading all the positive reviews on Yelp I was expecting to be wowed with great atmosphere and service, and I just can't say that I was. Don't get me wrong - AWM is a cool place. The artwork on the walls is a little creepy for my taste to say the least, but you can tell that they're going for an off-the-wall vibe. It is still a classy establishment while managing to be trendy (and dare I say hipster). Wine bars are my jam, so I was looking forward to seeing all the different libations that AWM has to offer. The wine list is extensive and they also offer some great meat and cheese accompaniments, both local and exotic. The small plates and desserts also looked tempting. My friends and I ordered off the happy hour menu: all meats and cheeses are half price at happy hour, and half pours of wine are $4. I tried two different types of wine - the Riesling and the Moscato. The Moscato was easily my favorite and I would highly recommend it. I would venture to say that it is one of the best Moscatos I have ever had. On the other hand, I didn't feel that the Riesling was anything special at all. We also ordered the clothbound Cheddar cheese and one of the salamis. The presentation was lovely, but it seemed that they were pretty stingy with the accompaniments (we received two small pieces of cheese and there were three of us...?). I'm accustomed to being able to share cheese plates, but it seems that you really need to order your own at AWM. Everything was delicious, but we just wished we had more of it. My major qualm with AWM was the attitude of the bartenders. They were not rude in any sense at all, but in my opinion, the nature of this establishment calls for bartenders who will be talkative with the patrons and excited to recommend different types of wine based on their tastes. When I looked at the menu of dozens of different wines, I of course had no clue what route to take. Our bartender did give us some recommendations, but she didn't seem eager to talk to us about the wine menu even though we were some of the only customers in the bar at that time. This might not bother some people, but at a wine bar like this I would enjoy getting to know my bartender and hearing her suggestions. I would like to go back to AWM and give it another chance. I wish I had loved it, but it wasn't anything special to me during my first visit. Hopefully on my next trip to AWM I can add another star to this review, but for now you'll find me at Grapperia.
