  • I made my first appointment with Camelback Smiles after winning a teeth whitening kit through an employer-sponsored health fair. Sadly, I had a negative experience and I ended up walking out of the office before I was seen. I was taken aback upon arrival when the first thing the receptionist said was "I need to call your insurance-- because they're going to want to speak with you." I've never had a medical provider or dentist ask me to speak to insurance over the phone with them. Typically, insurance is confirmed before your appointment so that the provider knows what to bill. Not only was this bizarre, it also meant I would have to wait. I had scheduled my appointment weeks beforehand and completed all paperwork online. The receptionist asked me to sign some things, but just turned her computer screen toward me to review the documents. I couldn't even read/see what I was looking at as she clicked between screens while I hunched over her desk. Why would they have you lean over the desk and read from their screen? Maybe they prefer to be a paperless organization, but that is not the way to do it. I sat and listened to her end of an obviously misguided conversation with my insurance company: "Maybe this number will work", "I just need to get her assigned to this office", "What do you need?", "No, I'm talking to the patient". She eventually asked me to approach the desk and was having a conversation with both of us-- this bugged me to no end. I was already preparing to walk out when she told me, "Your dental coverage is only for accidents". What!? I've had the same coverage for 4 years through my employer and I've never had an issue. Let's say, even for arguments sake, that I did not have dental coverage. Why would you wait until now to run my insurance and find out? I walked my ass out of there and called my dental insurance provider just to make sure. They confirmed that I have full dental coverage. Guess I won't get that free whitening kit after all!
