  • Union Station is Toronto's main transit hub connecting to the subway, buses, GO and UP for a trip to or from Pearson Airport. It is quite a work of engineering given that it is also connected to the PATH and the arena next door. Given that construction has been ongoing there forever the configuration and access routes seem to change on a weekly basis. It is slightly confusing. With that said, the delayed work seems to be paying off and I like the architecture of the new York Concourse. The free Wi Fi there actually works for a change and the ticket counters are open at all hours. What I dislike (aside from the eternally delayed completion of construction work) is that at the new York Concourse all leases have been awarded to mass market, corporate and foreign chains. I mean could you find any other business other than Tom Hortons (Brazilian), McDonalds (US) and Uncle Tetsu (Japan) to fit in there? How about an independent business? Then again, judging by the queues at McDonalds I am in the minority and people are as suicidal as ever. I suppose Union has put a McDonalds there as a preferred suicide method for its customers over jumping onto a track. Lastly, I like the open space in front of Union Station, but as Toronto is not allowed to have any open space that is commerce free (hint: Dundas Square) they will cram 25 businesses in there every chance they get (Christmas, summer food market, etc.). Sigh.
