| - Marche Atwater is a market for local purveyors of fruit, vegetables, meats, cheeses, baked goods, beer, chocolates and flowers. There are a few convenience stores and restaurants also. Most of it is indoors but there are a few outdoor vendors under canopies. There were bathrooms, ATMs, outdoor picnic tables, and a parking lot. It is a stone's throw away from the water front and bike path.
Marche Atwater was one of our favorite parts of Montreal. In fact, we went there three times in two days. What we liked about it was that it seemed as if it was by and for locals. We've been to other markets (such as Pike Place Market in Seattle) that seem entirely touristy and have all sorts of gimmicky merchandise in the mix. Marche Atwater was mostly focused on food.
The meats and cheeses were most impressive to us; however, we were pleasantly surprised by the produce. We didn't expect good produce as far north as Montreal and were delighted to be proven wrong. We tried some pizza and highly recommend giving that a go. It's unlike pizza I've experienced anywhere else. The bread seems to be focaccia, very little sauce, and unexpected toppings.
