  • I will preface this review by saying that I intend on reviewing the team as it stands now, not the overall history of the franchise. Although wouldn't it be awesome to write a review of the 1992 Blue Jays? Or review individual players? As the half way point in the season has come and gone I think it's safe to say (barring stunning collapse or monumental ascension) that this years team will land itself squarely where it has been the past few years; solid, yet unspectacular, siting amongst the upper half of American League teams yet failing to play any meaningful games come September. Trust that I say this with heavy heart, as I was excited as anyone by the fast start this year. Did they over achieve to start the year? Probably. Are they capable of playing that well for that stretch of games leading to the end of the season? Probably. Are you sick of me asking and answering my own questions? Absolutely. This team has had an uncanny amount of injured pitchers, leading to them setting a major league record (as of last night's game) of having 5 starters make their major league debuts in one season. I mean come on, who the hell is Mark Rzepczynski? He did through a great game though. Therein lies the silver lining. Amidst the extremely disappointing seasons of Vernon Wells (who I believe has the lowest batting average of ANY American League starter with runners in scoring position), Alex Rios and BJ Ryan, some great young arms have emerged. What can you say about Ricky Romero? The kid can throw and has Greg Maddux like craftiness with that curve ball. Almost all of Brett Cecil, Brad Mills and Ricky Ray have shown flashes that they are capable of throwing effectively at the pro level. At least they're getting opportunities. Alas it'll be another year of 'maybe next year' but if you've followed this team for any length of time then chances are you have the patience to endure such a statement. I know I do. I hold this team close to my heart, as it (and baseball in general) is probably my first love. Many a night I fell asleep listening to Tom and Jerry call the games on the radio and I will never forget my dad driving my brother and I downtown (from Mimico where we lived at the time) after Carter hit that home run to celebrate with the thousands of strangers that instantly became friends when that ball carried over the fence. Here's hoping for a chance to do that again sometime.
