| - You just found one of the best hidden little treasures on the ass-end of Yelp, my friend.
I need you to get excited about this... I need you to be on this same Level as me. You need to raise the volume on this one.
You may not know, but you gunna learn. You gon' learn today...
Recommendations: uh, EVERYTHING.
My comfort foods are: Kimchi jiigae, seafood Tofu soup, seafood pancake, fermented bean paste stew, & Soon Dae Gook (Korean blood sausage).
That one made you smile, didn't it? Yesss, Yea-ha-haa! That's what I'm talking about, I love where your heads at.
If you see something on the menu you can't read, pronounce or recognize... order it, D'uh. Otherwise, why are you reading this, go get back in line at Pei Wei, Fresh Wasabi, or Panda Express. Those flavorless, cultureless McDonaldized versions of food.
Now, where we're we? Ah yes, fair Warning. Be prepared for the owner. She's a bit...well, should we say, she's like...This is her restaurant & she knows it.
She used to work down the block at Takama-what-ever-that-places-name-is, but left to open Cafe' Ga Hyang. Aaand in our estimation, no better move for food has ever been made.
She's like...
Some times, you may not even notice her, like soft background music that doesn't remind me of cats in heat, or subliminally as the Korean advertising on the wall telling me to drink more: all smiles & encouragement.
Other times, She she may remind you of a certain North Korean dictator.
In my experience, after refilling my glass a single time, she's told me that I drink too much water.
Another time, she took my order & then told me to order something else. She told me I won't like it. She said, and I'm paraphrasing here, that: this is not for you, Americans. You ( I think she meant white ) won't like this.
No big deal, she doesn't know me, or my love for everything cultural & food.
And after I insisted, she gave me that face; You know, the one homeless schizophrenics give you when you tell them you don't have any money. The face that says you're a liar and a stupid-head.
And that's true, I am a stupid-head, but don't say it to my face!
Look, listen, Follow me, don't get discouraged.
what I'm tellin ya is this: yes, she can be a pain in the ass. No, you may not understand much of anything thats transpiring. Yes, interactions may lead to inferences about your Manhood/Womanhood, threats against your safety I'm sure we're made in haste, who knows, whatever, it's Whatever.
Just remember, why you're here. You're here because once you step into the doorway, You crossed a thin spot in reality; an invisible meniscus that Jaunt'ed (Thank you Stephen King) you to Cafe' Ga Hyang--a small eatery, on the opposite side of the globe, somewhere in mainland South Korea.
So breathe in the air. Don't hurry through this. Friendships in culture are built over long, delicious meals. You're gunna want to take your time here.
