  • For being little bigger than a happy song, Birdsong is bringing some serious craft brew to the Queen City. Stopped in for a couple pints during Yelp's passport to NoDa and was majorly impressed with the offerings. First, the "tasting room" is little more than a long hall made of cinderblocks and corrugated aluminum, with a bar and taps on one side juxtaposed with a few tables and stools on the other. A large window looks out onto the actual brewery, but otherwise the place is spartan enough to feel like a secret back room where only those "in the know" would ever think to go. Given that there is no roadside signage on the main thruway pointing out this little gem tucked among industrial-looking warehouses, that's not such a stretch. Once inside, though, a board behind the bar sounds out the day's offerings which typically include an IPA, a pale ale, a brown ale, and a special or two. You can try a flight of three or go all out for a full pour of any offering by the pint or by the pitcher. The staff was very knowledgable about their beers and quick to describe the attributes of each. Bonus for salty roasted peanuts by the bucket, stashed amongst the tables. No doubt needed if you indulge in more than a couple pints here. As for the beer- really impressive. As others mentioned, a jalapeƱo pale ale was amazing. All the earthiness and essence of the pepper without any of the heat. Not hard to imagine downing these by the pitcher with a plate of fajitas or dish full of enchiladas and their requisite sauces. I was also particularly found of the "Higher Ground" IPA with the citrus notes that were readily apparent. Not too sharp, but not overly sweet or fruity. Too easy to kill a summer day on the back deck with a pitcher of this guy by your side. Even my wife (not a beer drinker) deemed this the perfect summer beverage. Once you've tasted your heart out, you have the option to take a growler or two home. Refills are cheaper, so recycle. You'll also notice Birdsong beers at a number of neighborhood bars and restaurants around Charlotte's trendier neighborhoods. So far as I am concerned, I hope to see them around a lot more. This is one song I want to continue to sing!
