  • I once had a friend who I would visit for business reasons several times a week. She lived in a beautiful house atop a mountain overlooking the ocean. She would start my day with a heart-starting cup of Cuban coffee, feed me sugar-laden Cuban pastries and at lunch drop me to my knees with the most incredible Cuban meals. Maria moved back home to Miami and I visited her several times, including a memorable visit to a local Cuban district that tourists never see, where we wined and dined the night away as if in the golden days of Havana. I have tasted and appreciated REAL Cuban food and I know what it should be. Cuban Foods has brought it to Phoenix! Today, on the way to pet sit for some friends and being a Sunday a favorite go-to little dive was closed and since I was looking at a bio of Mark Cuban (not a Cuban) I wondered if there were any good Cuban restaurants in Phoenix. What a surprise, there was one only a few blocks away from our friends' house. We walked in, two guys, early on a Sunday afternoon. Every table was full; it seemed all with local Cuban families. We were approached and greeted by a young man who welcomed us, asked us if it was our first time there, and explained that they are a family restaurant. He mentioned that several times, with a lot of pride. Since the tables were full and we had the opportunity to take our order out and eat it at our friend's house while we pet sat, he was happy to accommodate. I have been fortunate to have been welcomed at some of the most incredible small mom & pop dives in America by wonderful hosts, many times the owners or family, but I must say this young man ranks at the very top. He was literally glued to us to assure we received the absolute most personal and most welcoming service. After handing us the unbelievably complex menu he stuck close, helping us wade through it, and finally pointing out our best choice for a "to go" order, their Cuban Sandwich, and suggesting that it is so large that we could easily share it. He then patiently explained their drink menu (non-alcoholic) that he proudly let us know was brought in from Miami. After taking care of our orders he noticed that there were not enough chairs for us to sit in while waiting for our take out so he graciously snagged another chair for us. Not that the order took that long to prepare. And GRACIOUS is the key word, this young man was gracious beyond belief. The Cuban sandwich was, indeed, large. Much too large for one person to usually eat, so splitting it was an excellent idea. From my memories of what Maria used to prepare for me, this was 100% authentic Cuban, not that I had any doubts. The only, um, negative is that in our Styrofoam box in addition to the sandwich halves pierced by a single pimento-stuffed olive each was a handful, and I'm talking about a tiny handful, of limp cold French Fries. The fries were an embarrassment to the high quality of the sandwich. PLEASE, owners of Cuban Foods ... understand right now that the cold soggy fries are a huge negative. Replace them with something else, anything else! Some Cuban rice. Some Cuban beans. A slice of Plantain. Throw the fries in the trash and NEVER serve them again. I will overlook the horrible choice of fries this one time and rank Cuban Foods as a solid 5, which it earned without question on the strength of the young man's astounding customer service and by virtue of a sandwich that surpassed all expectations. Listen up. Next time I visit I hope and expect never to find French Fries again in your amazing little restaurant! And I hope any restaurant worker in America, employee or family, can learn from this young man's amazing commitment to customer service. I'm sure even Gordon Ramsey would approve!
