  • Beautiful, Exciting, and Hysterically Funny! If you're an adult, there might not be much here that is totally new. But experienced close up in this relatively intimate theater (compared to an arena) the acts are thrilling - and that's a big part of the charm of this Turn-of-the-LAST-century-themed-show. A sly-but-friendly ringmaster guides us through the experience - from 'The circus comes to town' to the Exciting Grand Finale! The acts are solid. The sets and lighting are commendable. The *feel* of the show is nostalgic, goofy, and entirely satisfying. However; none of this would work were it not for an amazing performance by David Williamson as Ringmaster "Willy Whipsnade". He is the evening's MC, and the door by which the audience enters and understands this experience. He is so engaging that you can't help but listen to his every word with a huge smile on your face - and frequent gut-busting laughter. He is the love-child of Mark Twain, Bud Abbot, and Groucho Marx - and carries that comedic DNA well. He somehow managed to transform what could have been a silly bit with four kids from the audience into one of the sweetest, funniest moments of the evening. [David, you are a MASTER of kid-wrangling] But the music... 1) It's all pre-recorded, which I found disappointing 2) It is almost entirely performed on synthesizers. (Even the best synths can sound "fake" when played on a big system.) 3) It's very contemporary, with much more in common with modern film score than early circus music 4) It works anyway - some of it quite well. It is beautifully written. However; I would much MUCH prefer to have heard less cinematic music played by live musicians. To me, that is an essential part of the old-school circus vibe, and was the one distracting fault of the evening. Still; an easy five stars. P.S. Addendum: Yes, this is a Family-Friendly show. But don't think that it is a "Children's Show". Adults love it too. But it is a kind, nice, and G-rated show. If you are looking for edgy, sarcastic, or sexy, there is plenty of all of that in other theaters on the Strip.
