  • Let me begin by saying my feelings for the police department have always been rather neutral. Like anyone else, I have been stopped by police once or twice for speeding and there have been moments where I have spared and let go with a warning, and one or two occasions where I have been issued a ticket. Either way, I am not one to take things personally when stopped or confronted by police for a any reason. As the grandchild of a retired police officer, I have enough common sense to know that it is best to respect other people, particularly those in a position of authority. On 3/20, as I proceeded to my car after work, I noticed several police cars, fire trucks and an ambulance truck surrounding the street where my car just happened to be parked. As officers began to block off the street with tape, I approached an officer who kindly told me I would "have to wait a while". I overheard the officers describing the incident as a possible "leak" of some sort so I waited patiently on the corner of the street. I would like to point out that this incident occurred in downtown in the Arts District which is not the ideal place to walk around to kill time, but since police officers had surrounded a whole perimeter, I figured I could take a walk around the block and hoped things would clear up soon enough. Halfway around the block, I approached another group of officers and told them I was unable to get to my car. One of them took the initiative, communicated over his radio, and reassured me that they would allow me to exit. Without hesitation I proceeded to where my stroll began. When I arrived, another officer who was quite friendly, asked me "How are your backing out skills?" (At this point, I was not willing to test my skills by trying to avoid hitting a fire truck and a few police cars surrounding my car... I am no Steve McQueen...lol). When I told him honestly, "Well, not great," I was pleasantly surprised when he offered to back it out for me. After handing him the keys, I waited patiently at the corner for my car to arrive. On a serious note, it was Friday, I was anxious to pick up my daughter from practice and a bit frantic over the possibility of not being able to pick her up on time. So, hats off to Metro and the officers who helped me out! Ave
