  • As a longtime Valley resident, I'm embarrassed to say that I've never visited the Desert Botanical Garden until now. I was never really interested in doing so, because I see cactus every day, but the Garden is a Valley treasure, full of beautiful Sonoran desert plants and wildlife that made me appreciate the desert and proud to be an Arizonan. We've been here three times now just in the past week, at different times of the day (morning, late afternoon and night) and the Garden is always full of wildlife. We saw rabbits, doves, ground squirrels, quails, hummingbirds and other animals as we wandered the gardens, full of beautiful plants, trees and MASSIVE cacti. There is a cool area full of strange and interesting plants and cacti that look like something out of a Dr. Seuss book. Kids seem to love the area with the replica Native American huts (Tohono O'odham and Apache, I believe) and the mesquite forest, where they can grind mesquite seeds into flour with grinding stones and pestles, like Native Americans did. DBG also serves as a beautiful and romantic backdrop for weddings and first dates, with some little semi-private nooks for quiet contemplation or smoochy-smoos. DBG is a MUST SEE place, especially if you are a resident, but be mindful of the weather before you go. On hot days, a walk through the Garden can feel like wandering through Death Valley, but on beautiful days with sunny, breezy weather, the Garden is a breathtaking paradise. Try to go early in the morning, if possible, and bring water.
