  • Seldom do I look forward to spending money. Who does, right? However, as I tell anyone who is willing to listen to me, the very modest annual fee I pay to Club SAR is easily the best $99 ($150 for non-Scottsdale residents) I spend all year! This place has served me very well for the nearly 20 years I have been a dutiful member. For less than some people probably spend on Starbucks in a month, I get all that I want from my neighborhood, city-run gym and more. I am surprised by a few of the negative reviews regarding the fitness class offerings. The schedule of classes is diverse, accommodating to a variety of fitness needs and levels, and the days and times classes are offered are clearly posted in several places in the gym. Alisa, one of the dynamo instructors there, is fantastic! She is high energy, full of helpful fitness tips and always ready with a smile and a high five to get you through one of her challenging classes. As well, the staff is top notch. Each time I go to Club SAR (which can be up to 5 days/week), I am warmly greeted by name. Tom, Jonathon, Gabriel and Justin (and others too) are what gives this gym character and exemplify high-level customer service. Oh, and what about the rest of the gym? It's wonderful, too! The free weights area is just what I need. Nothing fancy, but 20 pounds weighs 20 pounds whether you are paying $9/month for it or $90! I also take advantage of their clean, efficient weight machines. Their cardio options get the job done as well. Treadmills, rowing machines, stationary bikes, elliptical machines and more can be found here at the best-valued gym in town. After a sweat session, I can use the locker room which is utilitarian and spotlessly clean and has lockers, restrooms, and a shower area. As you can tell I am rather passionate about this place . . . so much so that now my oldest will get to be a member there too as they welcome young people ages 14-17 to join . . . and for only $50/year! ($75 for non-Scottsdale residents) So, if you are looking for a no nonsense, friendly, no frills gym (with even a boxing ring with "real" boxing) come check out Club SAR which is open 7 days a week. Between the customer service, the facilities, the tons of variety of activity options and the fact that it is the best value in Scottsdale, you will be sold!
