| - Driving up to an nondescript Asian mall in Unionville from downtown Toronto because some hip whitey from BlogTO.com** suggested you do such an insane thing for the sake of some ice cream (which apparently is now called "soft serve") with HK egg waffles (much like what Bang Bang on Ossington Ave offers, but here it's an all-Asian operation--with 'soft serve') seems like a huge expedition to undertake. But you do it anyways just 'cuz.
Woofles and Cream is a tiny stall located inside the New Kennedy Square mall around the Kennedy/Hwy 7 area, at the food court right next to a depressingly dinky stage. If you see a group of young and predominantly Asian (and predominantly foodie) folks huddling around, you have found Woofles and Cream.
And so like a young Asian dude who drove all the way from downtown TO for this, you get to choose whether you want ice cream--in only two flavours, matcha, vanilla, or in a mixed twist--or the waffles--which they refer to here as "woofles". Like a young Asian dude who drove all the way from "the 6ix" for this, you're going to get everything in a cup. It cost ya about $7.50, but you drove all the way from downtown Toronto for it, so you wait for your woofles and cream in a cup to be ready.
The ice cream was light in taste, but it was hot out and you drove all the way here, so you woof that down along with the lap cheong (cured Chinese sausage) and seaweed "woofle". Said waffle was pretty good even if it sounded a bit weird, with the bit of savouriness contrasting with the dense fluff of the waffle itself.
However, was told there was a 20-minute wait as they (and by "they," I mean it's a two-people operation) worked to woof down the queue of orders. Paced around the mall to see what's there for five minutes, watched the old mall rats in the food court play Chinese chess for another five, and then went back to the counter to see what's up.
If you wondered why there's a group of young kids huddling by the stall, don't ask what they are waiting for. Instead you ought to see how they make the "woofles." HOLY FUCKING GOODNESS, IT IS SUCH A LABOUROUS PROCESS! If you ordered a specialty waffle like the lap cheong and seaweed, you are going to see the poor sap have to add in the individual pieces of seaweed and cut bits of sausage into each cell of the wafflemaker. I don't know if there are freshness concerns with having pre-mixed batter, but by golly this is very inefficient and makes you want to gouge out your own eyeballs waiting.
Unless you live around or frequent the area, coming all the way up here for Woofles and Cream is strictly for the novelty of it. Especially if you have to wait for an hour (as some have reported) for some bloody soft serve and egg "woofles."
{YRT transit: the VIVA Purple/Green or the 8 bus should haul you to where this mall is}
