  • I am sharing my experience because we learned a little about "Quality of Life". I came to The Greatful Pet Animal Clinic years ago as a referral from other Lab owners from our breeder. I was pleased with the service and the staff that helped with our dog really cared about her. We worked with all the vets in this office and worked recently with Dr. Moore to help get our overweight dog on a diet and we all worked together as a family to get her out for more walks and paid for doggie camp twice a week. We had success with our dog and Dr. Morris and we continued to monitor her and she is doing really well. Yesterday Dr. Morris failed us with a very difficult decision we had to make regarding the quality of life for our 17 year old BLIND cat who after blood tests it revealed kidney failure which requires twice a week dialysis, a thyroid issue which required a daily pill and then there was special food and a powder substance as well. My cat could no longer jump on to the spot on the couch where she once soaked in the sun, she could no longer jump up on to bed to hang out or nudge us for attention, she had a hard time getting into her kitty litter box and started going the bathroom in different spots in our home. She once loved to play with the cat toys and loved jumping into empty amazon boxes - no more. She also limped and she couldn't sit upright as she used to meet me at the door when I came home from work - she just laid there. When I was home and me being the ONLY person she would allow to hold her - I cradled her like a baby in my arms. See, 17 years ago in the dead of winter with snow in Michigan she was abandoned by her mom under my neighbor's deck. With my village of friends and neighbors we nursed her feeding her by a bottle and we brought her to work to keep an eye on her the first 8 weeks of her life and she survived. And lived the past 17 years loved and happy. When my poor husband spent over three hours at the vet with calls to me we made the best decision for our family member in regards to her quality of life. The vet questioned not supported our decision we made and twice pulled my husband into the room to try and talk him out of making this decision. We even talked it over with our family which included my inlaws, my sister (vet tech for 26 years), friends. Furby was a family member to all of us and as a family and we made the right decision. So, Thank You! From what happened yesterday it sparked communication with our aging parents about what their definition of quality of life is. What we think verses what they think quality of life is we now have more insight and will have their wishes and our wishes in writing. You and your staff did not comfort my husband but tried to have him question a decision we made as a family for our beloved pet. He was already upset with his wife crying on the other line and having to share the news with our daughter. We already have received numerous referrals for Vets!
