  • I do a lot of traveling both domestically and internationally. I've been to dozens of airports all over the world so I can say that I have a pretty good idea on how some of them work. Compared to other international airports this place isn't that bad. Now the rundown of this place. There is a cellphone lot that is pretty nice, lines and arrows direct traffic. Everyone goes the same direction unless you're so stupid you can't follow an arrow. There are giant electronic signs showing all flights arriving and which terminal to go to. If you miss your turn to pick someone up, that's okay because the terminals are in circles. You just keep driving and you'll come back around. I usually use their check in sections outdoors so I only have to haul my suitcase from the curb to the counter 3 feet from the curb and they tag it and take it. I'm then hands free to roam around the place. Airport security isn't too overwhelming and it never takes me long to get through it. Just follow the rules online, don't try to pack or carry on anything stupid like lighters, liquids over a certain amount, etc. Wear shoes easy to slip in and out of, try to avoid wearing belts. Eat before you go because the water and food are very overpriced. Compared to other international airports I've been to, that's the one downfall of phoenix is their ridiculous prices. I can get a simple ham and cheese sandwich at one of the stands for $10+ and in Hong Kong I can sit down for a meal for maybe $5 more. Never had an issue leaving out of Sky Harbor but I've had 1 issue returning. I had a neck pillow and I dropped it and I hadn't crossed the forbidden line yet. I could see the no return line but was still nowhere near it. When I turn around to walk back to grab my pillow sitting on the floor, security yelled at me and told me I couldn't return for it. I kindly let them know I hadn't cross that point yet where the sign says no return beyond this point. I pointed to the pillow on the ground and told them I wanted to just grab it but nope, even though they could see it laying on the ground they kept screaming at me in front of everyone to leave it there. I asked if a worker could bring it to me and they declined. I was extremely annoyed considering good neck pillows can cost $30 at times. To have to watch your $30 sit on the floor without permission to grab it is just stupid. Other issues I've had is them cancelling flights and leaving myself and everyone else sitting in the airport with nothing to do for hours. Nothing was opened to grab a drink or food or snacks. You couldn't shop for books or do anything really. Whereas other international airports I go to have something open late at night. The entire place doesn't shut down completely like this place did. And they never gave us really any status updates as to when we'd be leaving either so you were required to just sit and wait blindly. Other than the few bad experiences it's not a bad place. Assuming every flight leaves on time you get through pretty quickly and without hassle and they've yet to lose my luggage.
