If you like adventure and a great Banh Mi and want to be assured of a bargain: Go!
The adventure is in getting there. Stage one is the parking lot. You may need to get your alignment checked later. Once you get close enough to park, you gotta find it. There's not much signage. You need to know where you're going. Don't turn around it's really there. I went in through the entrance next to the grocery. You will wonder if the surrounding businesses are open. Keep walking. A few steps in you wonder if the a/c is working. It's the south, it's supposed to be hot. Stay cool, don't gawk. You start to think this kinda looks like a movie set. Legitimate businesses (food establishments no less) can't really be functioning in here. Ignore what looks like used to be fountains or decor. Ambiance that's all it is.
The menu is brief. You know why you're here. Service is friendly and welcoming as well as informative. It is also quick. By the time you get over the sticker shock, you know those have to be retro prices. Your order is ready. I must admit I spent way too much time thinking of the sardine sandwich I didn't get. I got the 2 #7s one spicy. Don't try it if you don't think a certain amount of pain is necessary to enjoy good food. You'll will devour half of it before you realize you're consuming a whole jalapeno. The combination of pickled vegs and fresh cilantro lull you into a false sense of security. The bread is perfectly crisp and then soft and yielding. By the time you feel the heat effusing down your throat and warming your face, you are done.
You feel like you've accomplished something just getting there. The sandwiches assure you that it was worth it. A GREAT spot. Everything you probably heard about this place is likely true. You gotta try it.
