| - I have stayed at GVR Resort about eight times in the last two years. I'm all over the board with the stars on this place. Decor and aesthetics get five stars from me. The rooms are tastefully appointed in a classic tuscany-style decor and the suites are GORGEOUS. The pool is as pretty or prettier than any I have seen in Las Vegas, but I must admit I have not seen them all yet! Service--with the exception of the likeable and helpful bell staff and shuttle drivers-gets just two. The casino gets three to four stars for decent play and game selection. The bartenders are a mixed bag. There is one daytime woman at the Drop bar I absolutely love, but others are downright negligent--playing music way too loud during off hours (Hey, Vegas is a 24-hour town. Be ready for customers any time!) On a recent visit, RAW had to yell at a man the female bartender was sitting next to at a video poker machine because he yelled expletives regarding his gambling losses. He appeared to possibly be an off-duty worker of some sort, but when RAW asked if he worked there, the bartender sheepishly said no, that he was I customer. I don't know. She proceeded to fill my coffee past the meniscus so I had no choice but to burn myself when I picked it up. One time, though, a real sweetheart of a bartender offered to take me to dinner at Hank's-a gorgeous, gorgeous steakhouse I have yet to try (I declined) and then proceeded to buy me a burger from the cafe and bring it to me because it was my birthday and I was crying in my champagne because RAW and I had had an argument. Boo hoo. Warning: GVR is uber-expensive. Expensive can be okay if things are a good value for the money, but if I were to actually pay the rack rate for a room here (sometimes $350) I would expect to have my you-know-what kissed a lot more than it does when I use my comps. It is as if the staff isn't...ummm...informed. From the concierge--who begged ignorance when I asked for the exact name of the movie theatre to the Keno staff who did not know if I could view the Keno numbers from my room to a casino manager who suggested I get up from my slot machine and make a phonecall when I asked as he walked by, if I could use my comps at the food court. GVR is a good staycation though, with a movie theater and the shops and restaurants at The District, Pizza Rock, a Bingo parlor, the fabulous pool, a top-notch food court and gorgeous beyond gorgeous grounds. With a little staff training, a slightly better value for your buck, and a wee bit more consistency in the appointment of the rooms (some are markedly better than others in the same category), GVR could easily garner four or even five stars. A great place with sometimes shoddy service.
