| - This is a place that made me squeal with delight when I drove past for the first time. I noticed the Arboretum almost immediately after moving to the area, but did some research prior to visiting; wondering if there was an admission fee, open/close hours, etc.
To my happy surprise the Arboretum is free and open to the public, as well as open from dawn-dusk.
Now that I had some general information, Hubs and I decided to visit for the first time today, a Sunday afternoon. We did visit on the hottest day of the year (so far), but there were still plenty of people out enjoying the scenery, calm and quiet.
We spent around an hour here taking photos, exploring the outside of the Japan House, watching the geese, walking to the Arboretum and the Idea Garden. Very nice walkway throughout the grounds, but you can also walk off-track.
I don't have a favorite part. I really loved all of it. The Idea Garden was very cute and kitchy. I'm a lover of succulents and they were well-represented in the Idea Garden.
As mentioned in my review for the Japan House, I'd like to return each season. I think the Arboretum will be beautiful in the fall. This would be a great place to take family/special occasion photos. I read the the Arboretum is 57 acres, so there's definitely much to explore.
Metered parking lot from 9-5pm, Monday-Friday. Parking is free on the weekends.
These grounds are really is something to appreciate. Thank you U of I and the many generous donors.
A great family-friendly activity.
