  • The Flying Squirrel Motorcycle Shop (FSMS) is one of the few motorcycle shops in the GTA located within the downtown area. Most are located in suburbia and are large, well-stocked with shiny motorcycles, parts and accessories. However you need a car or to ride your bike to get there and while there a lot of employees, there's usually a lack of customer service. The FSMS is situated on Carlaw Avenue, between Gerrard Street East and Dundas Street East. Easy to get to on the streetcar route or via subway with a quick transfer onto the 72 bus. The FSMS is located on the main/lower level of a large factory building, housing Green Tea Design, Moments Lounge, Toronto Newsgirls Boxing Club and other businesses. It's not a pretty place - it smells rather like motor oil and you feel like you wandered into a garage with various new and old motorcycles, a glass counter and shelving containing misc parts and accessories. Kind of like the parts counter at Canadian Tire, but Glenn, the owner-operator, is far more knowledgable, experienced and honest than that kid behind the counter. The shop is somewhat bare. He has the essentials like Motul oil, cleaning supplies, some locks, gloves, jackets and Shoei helmets. However, he can order almost everything for you from Arai to Givi to Nelson-Rigg to Puig, and at a pretty awesome discount. And even if you inquire via e-mail to which he is prompt to respond. The personal service is excellent - he spends the time to answer your questions and provides advice if you're looking to tackle some maintenance on your own. He tries to develop a relationship with his clients, and is not pushy at all. That is how I know his name and he knows mine. One time, I inquire about an item purportedly used to make a maintenance task quicker. He indicated that I could spend the money, but the task was not too difficult and the item in his opinion was not worth it. With that he lost an $75 sale, but gained the trust of a customer. Another time, I bought oil and filter from him to do my own oil change. I chatted with him a bit about it, and he lent me an oil filter wrench and gave me a washer for the drain plug. What more can you ask for? All in all, one of the best shops in the city I have visited so far.
