| - I would love to give the place five stars because at the core this hotel is absolutely adorable!
If you are looking for a perfect, nothing wrong with hotel this is not it. However, if you are not super picky and are looking for a very quaint place to stay away from Vegas this is it! You will find a very disconnected stay..meaning you most likely have no cell service and the wifi does not really work. This is something I think we all need from time to time however I can say that the addition of a good wifi would make a WORLD of difference.
We were able to check in early, which was great because that allowed us to unpack and then go sightsee for awhile. When we came back to the hotel there was a band (Three Blind Mice) playing on the front patio. The band had great energy and was fun to watch while drinking a cocktail from the bar they had set up outside. I would definitely come back up to just enjoy this on a Saturday evening even without being a guest of the hotel.
Let's talk about one of my favorite things, food! We ate in the restaurant on both nights of our stay. Night one we were seated by Jesse who was nothing but polite and pleasant. You can tell he was working his tail off but it did not effect his demeanor. Our server on night one was Penny she was very sweet, you could tell her and the other staff seemed to be a little busy and had a little trouble keeping up. This challenge was met with very polite and courteous apologies towards us. Our food was absolutely outstanding! We had the spinach/artichoke dip as our appetizers and it was hard to stop eating it! It was served in a bread bowl and the bread was perfectly seasoned. Their soup of the day was Cream of Chicken, which I must say I had very low expectations for and was very pleasantly surprised at how good it was! I wanted to order a second bowl but knew our main course was coming so I refrained. For our main course, we had the ribeye which came with seasonal vegetables and mashed potatoes. The ribeye was cooked and seasoned perfectly, the veggies were a zucchini and squash medley which were the complete opposite of bland and the mashed potatoes were delicious. During our meal Rich, the F&B director stopped by to check on everything, we loved his enthusiasm for the resort. We are very excited for the upcoming menu changes that he was telling us about and he also made us feel like we were old friends and could come to him anytime we needed something.
After our meal we stopped by the bar and had our first encounter with the person we dubbed as our favorite employee, Ray! Ray was awesome! He handled the busy bar with ease while making everyone feel important. After our drink we went back to our room and played Yahtzee on the borrowed game from the front desk.
The next morning, I had breakfast which for $7 was a great value. I had two eggs, potatoes, bacon, toast and fresh blueberries. The potatoes were amazing! The service was a little slow, I believe my server was covering someone else's shift, she seemed a little out of place and seemed to be doing multiple things at one time. I wasn't in a rush so no real complaint on how long it took.
Dinner that evening was good, not quite the same experience as the night before. I love their soups as they are making them from scratch and that makes all the difference in the world!
After dinner we went back to the bar and stayed until it was time to close. We played Yahtzee at the bar, haha.. Ray was our bartender again and it felt like we were all old friends. He was so hospitable and just plain fun to hang out with.
There are a lot of simple things the hotel could do to make the experience even better for the guests, and things that would not require a lot of money.
1. WIFI!!!!
2. Better Satellite TV
3. The game console in the lobby is AWESOME, if the controls were not broken. It's obvious these were probably broken by kids whose parents were not caring to stop them. My suggestion would be to keep the controllers at the front desk and make the parents sign them out. This way the parents would be liable.
4. Hire more service staff..I understand that it may be hard to find the proper staffing due to the location but that has to be something more that can be done for the busier nights. A majority of the complaints seem to be due to the service and it's not even the servers fault, they are visible kicking ass!
5. Make some upgrades to the rooms, even minor ones like painting them or the decor could make a huge difference.
It is a shame to see a place that has SO much potential not being fully utilized, the bad reviews on here make me sad. The Resort at it's core is just so beautiful, it makes you want to see it do better. I am 100% hoping there are more changes besides just the food in the future of this resort! But without a doubt I am excited to come to try the new menu in a few weeks!
Good luck Mt Charleston Resort, Thank you for having us!
