  • Fairport Harbor is one the best, if not THE best, of the NEO beaches. The best thing about this beach is the nice, gradual slope in the swimming area. It doesn't just drop off like most other beaches in the area. You walk out a few feet in some really ouchy rocks but then it becomes really soft and sandy. There's a really cool sand bar here that allows you to be further out and actually sit and hang out in the water. It's very clean -- you won't see any needles or used rubbers laying around in the sand. The sand is hot as hell and not very soft but shit, it's better than being chock full of stuff with bodily fluids on it. Parking is $3 if you're not a resident of Lake county. If you are, it's $2. There are many amenities: lifeguards, a concession stand, clean bathrooms!, showers, pavilions, grills, nice playgrounds for kids, volleyball courts, free life jacket rentals, and Surf Chair's for people with disabilities. You can rent kayaks for pretty cheap -- single = $10 per hour or double = $15 per hour. Also, stand-up paddleboards = $10 per hour. If you have four-legged friends, there's a dog swim area as well. The worst part is that if you look to the east you'll see that horrible monstrosity that is the Perry Nuclear Power Plant. Try not to look at it and let it ruin your day. Additionally -- bacteria levels always seem to be high. But that's Lake Erie for you. Just take a shower when you get home (with soap!) and make sure you tell your spawn to keep their mouths closed while they're swimming.
