  • I usually research prospective purchases to death. Also shop around for higher ticket items, at least hitting a few stores/internet. Have nice road bike, but for health reasons I can't have my neck like that for average rides. Wanted a more versatile bike. Idea has been floating in head for short time. Was in Madison, tried to hit two other shops downtown not realizing it wasn't 10 am yet, both closed. Drove by Budget, open. First thought, years ago I stopped here and it was like a liquidator of misc. brand bikes. Or that's what I remember. Now it's packed full of nice bikes. It is July, but sizes seemed to be picked over. I had an unrealistic low budget for something nice, I went into this just wanting a bike to hop on- and not be such a production- like I feel my road bike is. A little over an hour later I had rode 4-5 bikes. Picked one a little over twice my budget (typical) and think I got a really nice bike! The 5 star review goes to Mike, my sales person. He is awesome. Wow. Patient. Not pushy. Tried to put me in a bike at my budget. Was super accommodating about my crazy saddle preference. Chatted with my husband. Let me take all these bikes out to compare and ride. Explained their business differences, mainly service package that comes with the bike. Offered ideas for small service issues. It was really busy there too, and he did a great job handling all the customers. Multi-tasking in retail is almost extinct, kudos for being able to do that. As I was paying, I asked him if I saved a lot because they have Budget in their name. He said maybe a little, but it's mostly purchasing with them is about the service, and that they are not exactly the same store the owner started across the street many years ago I think in the second story of an old building. They also own the two other downtown stores. I ended up with a Trek DS 8.4 Viper Red. It's way cool. Husband said do not do post purchase research like you always do. But I did, couldn't help it. I paid a fair price, had excellent service, and got a 5-star reviewed bike. Thanks Mike @ Budget!
