| - Broadway in Arizona? That may sound like an oxymoron, I know.
Additionally, who would want to come to Peoria, Arizona - no less? Where is Peoria, Arizona?
If you are from a large metropolis, especially, from the East Coast, those words may ring true for you.
However, I will definitively state that there is Broadway level acting right here in Peoria, Arizona. And it is stupendous!
After having returned from a business trip to the San Francisco Bay Area, and having seen what a large metropolis had to offer in the form of the San Francisco Playhouse; I was anxious to get re-acclimated to Arizona's local theater scene.
I've been to ASU's Gammage plenty of times, but I don't believe that to be representation of local theater talent as most of those plays are simply traveling Off Broadway productions.
I wanted to see what Arizona had to offer.
And the Arizona Broadway Theater definitely delivers in spades.
I made a last minute reservation for their current production of Lucky Stiff. Everything was sold out online, and so I had to make a last minute phone call on my way back from Tombstone.
My wife was not able to accompany me, so I was going to have to enjoy this by myself.
"Lucky Stiff" is simply magnificent. The set was well done. The acoustics of the place was wonderful, and the performing cast was astounding.
Trisha Hart Ditsworth, who plays Annabel Glick, was just lovely. And her voice reminded me so much Sandy Duncan's singing on Peter Pan, the play. It was simply angelic. I was just a little kid when I saw Sandy Duncan; therefore, the impression and memory that was left upon me was so deeply ingrained. And Ms. Ditsworth's voice revived those memories during her solo piece, which was just so deeply captivating.
Seth Tucker, who plays Harry Witherspoon, has such a great vocal range and diction. His English accent was simply adorable.
Abigail Raye's performance as Rita La Porta was also quite memorable and noteworthy.
Now, this is a comedy; therefore, I would not compare my experience here to a what I still so distinctly remember as such powerful performances such as Betty Buckley's performance of "Memories" in the play Cats. Or the entire Company in "Rent" singing Seasons of Love.
Those are very powerful performances that are bordering on the spiritual.
Nonetheless, the performances of the entire cast, and the overall production in general is definitely at "Broadway' level in my humble opinion.
I don't want to detract from the other theater venues in town, but I will definitely state that this is a premier level orchestration of theater.
And the icing on the cake was availability of the cast for a meet and greet as you depart from the auditorium. If it weren't for a work related call that I had to tend to at that late hour, I would've loved to meet the cast and thank them for an awe inspiring performance...
