| - I have never received competent help from a staff member at the Yellow Jersey. If you go in for a part, they'll try and sell you the wrong one. If you're looking for a bike, you'll be greeted by an expensive and impractical selection, presented by staff members who seem incapable of saying anything useful about the bike. If you want to upgrade or replace a part on your bike, not only will you and the staff struggle to find their available stock, but the limits of their advice seems to be that you should buy the most stylish and expensive of the shop's options.
The mechanics provide mediocre service, but don't seem to be particularly knowledgeable. I've heard other people say that the mechanics will often fix small things for free, which is great since the shop is conveniently located on State Street, but I'm not sure that it is the best place to go if you need a substantial overhaul or repair of your bike.
Some people have clearly had better experiences than I, but on the other hand I've known plenty of people who had absolutely awful service at the Yellow Jersey. Given the inconsistency of the service, I can't say that I would recommend going there unless it is an absolute emergency.
Nonetheless, I would rather go and try and deal with the Yellow Jersey than shop at a chain, such as Erik's over on University. I wish the Yellow Jersey was a better shop, because it has a great deal of character and its nice to have a bike shop on State Street. Whatever it is they do in there, as I don't think that I've ever seen them sell a bike, it seems to work well enough for them to stay in business.
Luckily there are a lot of other, better, and locally-owned, shops within a mile of the Yellow Jersey, so I've never had to settle for it.
