| - This is a review for their afternoon tea for 2.
Ambiance - 0/5 stars. You're basically sitting in a small bakery in VERY close proximity to other afternoon tea-ers. I also don't recall any music playing in the background either. There is no free wifi available either.
Service - 2/5 stars. Our server was nice, but she was also constantly busy being the cashier at the bakery. We had to waive/flag her down to get more hot water for the tea or to get more jam, etc. Again, she was nice, but the service was not exceptional of any sort.
Food - 3.5/5 stars. Being Asian, the food felt catered for my tastebuds. For the savouries, there was a smoke salmon bruschetta, a corn salsa bruschetta, arugula leaves wrapped in prosciutto, and a small quiche. Out of these four, I would say the two bruschetta pieces were my favourite. The corn salsa was surprisingly good despite what it looked like. The prosciutto wrap was disappointing...I don't think saltiness of the prosciutto and the bitterness of the arugula go well together.
As for the scones, it felt as if they made them early in the morning and then reheated them when we showed up. They were warm, but not the "fresh-out-of-the-oven" warm. Plus, they cooled down really fast after like 2 minutes. HOWEVER, despite the temperature, they still tasted very good and they weren't super heavy and thick. The strawberry jam was a good complement to the scones, but they gave us a tiny amount which really only covered like 1.5 scones. You can ask for more jam though (for free)!
The desserts were a bit disappointing as well considering I've tried the actual Ruelo pastries in the past. There were 2 mini creme brûlées, 2 macarons in 2 different flavours (caramel and creme brûlée), 1 mini slice of cheesecake, and 2 mini cranberry danish pastries. The creme brûlées were good, the macarons were just OK (I didn't appreciate the redundant creme brûlée flavour though), the cheesecake was OK, but the cranberry pastries were delicious!! As you can tell, out of all the desserts, the only one we really liked was the cranberry pastry.
Teas - 4/5 stars - They offer a good selection of teas (included non-caffeinated ones) and allow you to smell the tea leaves from a tea sampler tray. My husband chose the "St. Petersburg" and I chose the "BB Detox". The teas tasted great, but I docked off a star since the tea pot and cups were kinda bland and we had to keep requesting for more hot water since the pots were so small.
Price - Tea for 2 normally costs $51.98 (including taxes, I'm assuming), but they ALWAYS have a Groupon deal going on, so we paid $35 for 2 people. You have to pay the taxes and tips (on the $35) additionally at Ruelo though. For $35, I think it's a decent deal...but I definitely don't think it's worth $51.98.
