| - Note: I'm ONLY writing this as someone who attended a conference at the hotel and came here to work. I'm not a gambler or big drinker, so those activities aren't a bit draw for me.
The negatives:
* Understaffed registration desk. A line of 50 people wanting to check in and only ONE clerk? That's just bad. I noted this hadn't improved on any of the four days I was here. Unacceptable.
* Messed up room: Upon arriving to my room, there was a used towel on the bathroom counter, the toilet seat was not bolted down, and the second bed in the room was torn apart to and displaying a huge rip in the mattress. My room was supposed to be for non-smokers, but it smelled of stale smoke. "Your room is ready sir...."
* Restaurant service: I ate in two restaurants while here and experienced extremely slow service. 35 minutes for a bowl of chili? 20 minutes to get the check after finishing my meal?
* Wifi: I paid $29.00 for 3 hours of Wifi in the conference center so I could make my presentation, but the Wifi cut out every 12 seconds or thereabouts, so I had to wing it, and there is no refund. A total waste of $$$ and just bad service for a place that wants to cater to conferences. And the 'free in-room Wifi' is only slightly better. Sometimes it gets stuck in a "Please sign In" mode and you have to respond to requests for your room number and name multiple times, or call the help line for assistance.
* No shuttle to or from the airport. Don't have a car and want to get to the hotel? Pay $9.00 for a ride in a shuttle to get to the Tropicana. Want to take the shuttle back to the airport? Sorry, you have to request the shuttle 24 hours in advance, or pay $20 for a cab. The MGM Grand across the street has a free shuttle to and from the airport...
And while everyone tells me the Tropicana just went through a major renovation, 50% of that was just painting the bamboo trim white. There is new carpeting in the hallways, and new sinks in the guest rooms, but the place still comes across as rather tired. With all the other choices in Las Vegas, I can't see why anyone would want to choose the Tropicana.
