| - I was thrilled when I heard SOMA opened up another location on King Street a few years ago. As a person who cannot live without sugar, this place has become one of my few favourite chocolate havens.
My coworkers and I have made several treks from our office to SOMA in order to fulfill all of our chocolate cravings. This little shop emanates warmth, intimacy, and charm that I would hope to find in every chocolate dreamland. The staff members have consistently exhibited exceptional customer service - always greeting us as soon as we enter the store and offering assistance for our occasional chocolate needs and desires. Over time, I've had the pleasure of trying (or should I say devouring) several of the products they offer.
Gelato.
Their gelato is probably my favourite in Toronto. Now, I haven't taste tested every gelato shop in existence, but I would say this is a pretty high quality product. I've had their dark chocolate gelato and it is truly delicious. It has an intense and rich chocolate flavor that has me yearning for more.
Chocolates (truffles and bars).
"Starry Night" - chocolate bar: I don't know what it is about chocolate and salt that I find so appealing but I absolutely love this combination. When I bake I tend to add a dash of sea salt to my chocolate concoctions so when I saw these beautiful bars of chocolates sitting on the shelf I thought it was a perfect match for me. This chocolate bar is available in milk chocolate and dark chocolate however I have a preference for the dark chocolate version. This sweet cocoa bar is sprinkled with maldon salt, adding a perfect mixture of sweet and salty.
Truffles:
One day I decided to indulge myself (okay maybe it was more than 1 day) so I bought a box of assorted truffles.
Bergamot - This truffle had a mild fruity & citrusy taste without losing any chocolate flavoring. It was subtle but delicious.
Caramel Cream Kiss - I expected a creamy caramel filling but instead was pleasantly surprised to find a caramel and milk chocolate ganache in the middle. Sweet and creamy... and also very cute!
Douglas Fir - I thought this was an interesting truffle. It is described as "Douglas Fir tree" and having a "fresh pine flavor" but I barely tasted anything "pine-y" about it. If anything it was a very mild aftertaste of mint. It was not my favourite but still interesting nonetheless.
Espresso Crisp - What a delectable little treat this was! This truffle contains an espresso infused ganache layered with a delicate, light, cookie crunch! It is one of my favouites to consume.
Spicy Mayon Dome - Picture SOMA's spicy mayan hot chocolate and imagine that condensed in a truffle version! This little chocolate is infused with chili, ginger, orange peel, and cinnamon. This chocolate is definitely different from your average milk chocolate truffle and the chili adds a nice little kick to it too.
Sparky - My initial reaction to this chocolate was, "that's weird" however it has grown to be my favourite truffle of all. This chocolate truffle is laced with pop rocks! I know, weird combination, right? But the pop rocks are so subtle in flavor and well blended into the chocolate that it does not even overpower the classic hazelnut chocolate flavor it is embedded in. Very unique in flavor and addictive.
Mocha.
Bittersweet chocolate blended well with a strong espresso. A warm treat that is great during the cold winter temperatures. No prepackaged stuff. This beverage is fresh all around.
Overall, this chocolate shop is one of my favourite shops to visit. My experiences have always been positive! The store has great customer service and products that are unique and of a very high quality. They also offer sandwiches and items to be used for baking as well which I hope to try soon. Stop by and indulge yourself with a truffle...or two...or twelve.
