| - EDIT: After a few more experiences here, I'm knocking it down to three stars. The pie is what's keeping it afloat for me. Good selection and good flavors, but there are a lot of places in town that have superior food. I haven't been here to eat non-pie food in months.
The Hubbard Avenue Diner was a little difficult for me to nail down. I've been about five times in the last few months since arriving here. I landed on four stars.
Cons first: If I'm at a diner, there's a good chance that I want breakfast, and Hubbard gets dinged for not having breakfast available all the time. The breakfast food I've had here is good, and I'd love to have it as an option all the time. And maybe I just caught it on a bad day, but the chicken pot pie I had last visit was really bad. The menu advertises "a garden" worth of vegetables, and this must have been a very small garden. Also, the gravy in the pie was extremely watery.
Now for pros: Good, solid diner food, a tick above usually greasy spoon diner fare. The location is fantastic. Parking is always easy. There's never a wait. The servers are pretty efficient, if not always super friendly. The pie alone is worth the price of admission (chocolate walnut is excellent if you're into it).
I find myself wanting to go up here from where I live on the West Side a fair amount, but I never leave as happy as I hope I will. It's a really good spot, but with a little bit of menu tinkering, it would be even better.
