  • The first time I had visited a Muji store was in London, UK over 10 years ago and I was overly impressed at how massive the store was with everything imaginable, like a glorified dollar store, except everything was simply designed and neutral in coulour with merchandise displayed in an organized fashion. Even with the English pound pricing, it was still relatively reasonably priced. Then, I saw Muji in NYC, I thought wow, pretty neat and love how basic and simple everything was. Wondered when they'll hit the Canadian market. Long and behold it finally came to Toronto at the end of November. I waited for a few months until the hype was over before I paid my first visit since I had no desire to wait in line just to enter the store or fight through the chaotic crowds especially being so close to the Eaton Centre. My visit this afternoon (Tuesday) wasn't bad since the store wasn't busy, perhaps a handful of customers. Upon entering through the Dundas entrance, I wasn't impressed at all. The store was quite small! Not what I imagined a Muji store would be after seeing the locations in London and New York. This location still had the clean, simple, natural and minimalist look and feel that Muji is known for, plus everything imaginable was displayed neatly and nicely, but most of the items I thought were overpriced. Like most, I like the simple and neutral look, but why do people fuss so much over Muji? It's quite expensive! People are buying into the brand and good for them, but I don't think I'll be a regular shopper with these high prices. Rumours of another store opening in Toronto (perhaps in Yorkdale), we shall see how long this location last first. Nevertheless, I didn't buy anything, but was only there to browse. I was in the store for perhaps 10 minutes, but not one single staff member greeted or smiled my way for that duration and they did have four floor staff and two cashiers. Plus they weren't busy, so imagine if they were busy, how will they ever manage? Perhaps schedule more staff to simply concentrate on refolding clothing and organize products in place so everything looks perfectly aligned. Customer service at it's finest!
