  • I haven't been to the ymca in a long time but decided to check it out cause they were doing a promotional event. Free fitness classes and facility use for their open house, 1 day only to celebrate their new renovations. I wanted to check them out thoroughly cause I will need a new gym when my current membership at another place runs out. That and I needed to work off my food binging on the holidays. Lol. So, I came with a lot of motivation and ended up being there for 4 hours! :P 1hr: I started with weights and running. They have all the typical things I needed (treadmills, ellipticals, weights, exercise mats, etc) as well as a running track on the third floor. They even had "battle ropes" aka what I like to call ropes of pain! XD Staff and other gym members were nice enough to show me how to use it. It's fun for like about...5 seconds but then it gets real. Lol. 1hr: I moved onto a fitness bootcamp class. It was a good workout but the instructor never gave you any real breaks, more like water breaks and she transitioned into moves a bit too fast. She was a beast, and I think the one guy I saw there was even struggling after her routine. 2hrs: After wobbling out of that class, I headed over to the pool to cool off. The swimming pool and sauna is on lower level, you reach them by going through the change rooms. If you just wanted to free swim like I did, you were out of luck. Only 2 lanes in the middle were free. One for slow swimmers and another for fast swimmers. I don't think it very efficient though, 2 huge portions of the pool were reserved by classes. Left side had only 1 instructor and 2 girls in the deep end. While the right side, had a bigger group in the shallow end. I believe they should have just all moved into one section. Bigger group only stayed in the shallow end and the smaller group remain in the deep end. If you have young children, they have another room where they are suppose to go. It's walled off by glass and I think sound proof? Anyways, after my swim, I stayed in the sauna for a bit on and off. Very nice except people don't follow the posted rules and like leaving clothes/towels there to dry. If you decide to join or check out facilities, remember to bring a towel, flip flops, a lock and a hair dryer. They have those old school hand dryers attached to the wall, which you are suppose to use but I think bringing a dryer is better. They also have a shipmate machine, which I love cause it shakes out water in swimsuits. Overall, ymca is a pretty good facility and the member ship fee is reasonable if you consider you get pool access, fitness classes, basketball and martial arts lessons, etc.
